The ignition barrel is one of the most mechanically stressed components in your car — it's operated thousands of times over the vehicle's life. When it starts to fail, the symptoms can range from a stiff key turn to a key that won't come out, or a car that simply won't start. Car Locksmith London carries ignition barrels for a wide range of makes and models and can replace yours on-site, cutting and programming new keys on the same visit.

Warning Signs Your Ignition Needs Attention

1

Key Difficult to Turn

Worn internal wafers cause increasing resistance. You start wiggling the key as a matter of habit — this will get progressively worse.

2

Key Gets Stuck

The key won't return to vertical to be removed. Often a worn wafer or the steering lock pin is jamming against a worn groove in the barrel.

3

Ignition Turns but Car Doesn't Start Consistently

Electrical contacts inside the barrel are worn — the circuit isn't always made when turning. The car may start on the third attempt. This will worsen.

4

Dashboard Flickers When Turning Key

Loose or corroded ignition switch contacts cause momentary power interruptions. You may see warning lights flash as you start the car.

5

Key Doesn't Return After Ignition Off

After turning the car off, the key should return to position 0 and come out freely. If it doesn't, the barrel's return spring or detent mechanism has failed.

6

Ignition Damaged / Forced

Signs of theft attempt — screwdriver marks, cracked surround, or barrel that turns freely without a key. Immediate replacement required for security.

Repair vs Replacement — What We Carry Out

🔧 Barrel Repair

Where the barrel is worn but structurally intact, we can disassemble and replace individual internal wafers, restoring the key's operation. We also lubricate with dry graphite compound (not oil — oil attracts dirt). Repair saves cost when viable.

from £120 + VAT

🔄 Full Barrel Replacement

When the barrel is seized, cracked, attacked, or beyond wafer repair, we supply and fit a replacement barrel. We cut new keys to the new barrel and programme the transponder to your immobiliser. You leave with two working keys.

£150–£350 + VAT

🚨 Post-Theft Ignition Replacement

If thieves forced your ignition, the barrel is compromised. We replace the barrel, recode the immobiliser to new keys, and check for any ECU faults left by the attack. We provide a receipt for insurance purposes.

£200–£420 + VAT

All prices exclude VAT. Fixed price confirmed before work begins.

⚠️ Do Not Force a Stuck Key

Forcing a stuck key risks snapping it in the barrel. Before calling us, try these steps:

  1. Ensure the car is in Park (automatics) — a gear selector not fully in Park can prevent key removal
  2. Turn the steering wheel left and right while gently pulling — relieves steering lock pin pressure
  3. Try jiggling the key up/down slightly while turning to release position
  4. If none of these work, stop and call us

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs that my ignition barrel needs replacing?

Key difficult to turn or requiring wiggling, key getting stuck in the ignition, ignition that turns but doesn't start the engine consistently, dashboard lights flickering when turning the key, or a barrel that's physically seized. Any of these warrant immediate inspection — a failing ignition won't give you much warning before it stops working entirely.

My key is stuck in the ignition — how do I get it out?

Do not force it. Check: is the car in Park (automatic) or has the steering locked? Try turning the wheel left and right while gently pulling the key — sometimes the steering lock pin is under pressure against the key. If that doesn't work, call us. Forcing a stuck key risks snapping it in the barrel, making the job significantly more complex and expensive.

Can you repair the barrel rather than replacing it?

Sometimes yes. Worn wafers inside the barrel can sometimes be replaced individually, restoring operation at lower cost than a full barrel swap. We assess on-site and recommend repair where viable. If the barrel is seized, cracked, or has sustained ignition attack (theft attempt), full replacement is usually necessary.

Do you carry out ignition replacement when the car's been stolen or attacked?

Yes. Ignition attack (where thieves force the barrel to hot-wire the car) leaves the barrel damaged and the security compromised. We replace the barrel and, where required, recode the immobiliser to a new key. This is essential — a forced barrel is a security risk even after recovery.

Will a new ignition barrel come with a new key?

Yes. When we replace an ignition barrel we supply a matched barrel and cut new keys to it. We then programme the transponder chip in the new key to your car's immobiliser so the car starts normally. You'll typically leave with two working keys.

How much does ignition barrel repair or replacement cost?

Ignition barrel repair starts from £120 + VAT. Full ignition barrel replacement with new keys typically costs £150–£350 + VAT depending on make and model. All prices exclude VAT and are quoted fixed before work starts.
