What is a transponder key and do you programme them?
A transponder key contains a small microchip in the key head. When the key enters the ignition, the car immobiliser sends a radio signal to the chip, which responds with a unique code. If the code does not match, the immobiliser prevents the engine from starting even if the physical blade is cut correctly. From around 1995 onwards, most cars use this system. We programme transponder keys for all makes and models using manufacturer-grade equipment to code the chip to your specific vehicle immobiliser.
My key turns in the ignition but the engine won't start - what is the problem?
If the key turns physically but the engine will not start, the most likely causes are: the transponder chip has failed or been deactivated; the immobiliser has developed a fault; or there is a fuel or electrical issue unrelated to the key. Our equipment communicates with your car's ECU and reads live fault codes. If the problem is key or immobiliser related, we fix it on-site. If the fault is elsewhere, we will tell you honestly so you can contact the right specialist rather than paying for key work that will not solve it.
I have lost both sets of keys for my car - can you still programme new ones?
Yes - this is possible and we deal with it regularly. When both sets of keys are lost, we cannot copy an existing key. Instead, we use specialist diagnostic software to connect to your car's ECU, read the existing key data, and either delete the lost keys from the system or programme new keys from scratch depending on your make and model. This process takes longer and costs more than a standard spare key job but is far less expensive than a main dealer. Call with your make, model, and year and we will confirm the process for your vehicle.
